The show is free, the drinks are cheap ($2 specials til 11pm), and the pizza and micro brews are the best in town.

Craig Harwood - Mandolin (Yale GRD '02, Dean, Davenport College)

music resumes 4/21 with Sidewalk Dave and Luke Elliot

Just a reminder, BAR is closed Wednesday 4/14 for a Wesleyan event.

Live music Wednesdays will resume 4/21 with Sidewalk Dave and Luke Elliot!

"Aggressive Folk-Rock pours like sweat from the four members of Sidewalk Dave. Since 2007, they have conjured up a deep instinct for rebellious brotherhood together in the North East. Elise Granata of Fairfield County Weekly, Inkwell Press, and The Sound Magazine writes, "... The New Haven-area band's album Songs for Cowards was one of our favorite local releases of 2009 and holds its own amongst the work of their nationwide peers. Sidewalk Dave (a guy actually named Dave, plus his bandmates) plies raucous garage-country and folk rock with slow dynamic builds, genuinely thoughtful lyrics, and the spirit of someone young and eager who nonetheless has really lived"(Fairfield County Weekly). They have played with such similarly inspiring acts as Deer Tick, O’Death, Neva Dinova, Woods, De Nova Dahl, Danielson, Cotton Jones, Wye Oak, Mcarthy Trenching, and put out 2 full-length Albums.

The future is clear, but the past has always been a struggle for Sidewalk Dave. From the beginning, ambition and drive to spread the good word through music has always been present. The goal has been the same; challenge people with music; make them believe and leave them wanting more. Over the past few years and into the future, Sidewalk Dave continues to push the listener, champion the weak, damn the wasteful, and cut through the mainstream. “What he is saying is worth the attention”, (Brian LaRue, New Haven Advocate)."

"It’s a damn shame that the grinding squeal of metal-on-metal of a train coming into the station, thick steam billowing out through the waiting crowd of gunslingers, priests and thieves is imagery so co-opted by generic Americana bands and Morricone-wanna-be’s, because that is the stuff of poets....And that brings us to Luke Elliot. This New Jersey native’s first full-length record, “In Our Embrace”, has all of that grit in every crack and crevasse of its runtime. And not in any sort of pedal-steel parody way, but in the way of withered waltzes, barreling ragtime, and hypnotic piano dirges underpinned by literate narrative that coats each melody like chipped paint on a broken down jalopy."

Show starts at 10pm. $2 well drinks and domestic bottles til 11pm. $3 Jäger shots all night. 21+

"Tim Palmieri has made a name for himself as one of the most impressive young guitarists on the national music scene today. Playing with his band The Breakfast alongside artists such as moe., Umphrey’s McGee, Tea Leaf Green, and Phish’s Mike Gordon, the New Haven native has amassed a loyal following of obsessive fans who keep tabs on just about every note.

While prominent in the jam scene for his aggressive and improvisational guitar style, Palmieri has grown equally comfortable behind an acoustic guitar. Timmy Tour – as fans have affectionately dubbed the Tim Palmieri Solo Acoustic experience – has grown organically and continues to expand as music lovers demand performances in their hometowns nationwide. These acoustic gigs are peppered with a mix of Breakfast originals, classic covers, and unexpected rarities, each of which Palmieri makes his own through his distinctive style of rhythmic looping."

Show kicking by 10pm - up front by the big windows!
(that's right, this week is cozy originals up front)

Brash and strong as slivovitz, these nine musicians have forged a virtuosic new brass band music in the heart of New York City – melding Gypsy, East European, Mexican, and Asian immigrant backgrounds with American jazz and soul – and “developed a reputation for delivering a great time.” (NY Times) One of the hardest working bands in New York, SSP! plays nearly 100 times a year in the US, Europe, and beyond.

Harris Brothers Brass Band 2/3!

Thanks to everyone who came out for St. Anyway - man did we have a crazy awesome time!

Bring your dancing shoes again this week for the Harris Brothers Brass Band! Whether you're circle dancing or just rockin out in the middle to their fantastic gypsy Balkan grooves, you'll have an awesome time.

The Harris Brothers' Band plays Balkan Music heavily influenced by the Roma (Gypsy) style brass bands of South-eastern Europe: Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Northern Greece. The band's lean, mobile style recreates the authentic, intimate experience of dancing to roving Roma musicians. The Harris Brothers, Laine and Drew, have their roots in numerous bands throughout the region, including Zlatne Uste, Gypsy Cab, Zurli Drustvo, Bez Granica, and the Subteraneans. Both have traveled and played music throughout the Balkans and performed at the Dragachevo Brass Festival in Gucha, Serbia. Helen Marx, percussion, also plays in the band Druzina.

Get your brass to BAR on Wednesday and dance it up...

Saint Anyway 1/27/10

This Wednesday at BAR - acoustic duo Saint Anyway!

St. Anyway is Tony Petersen and Jamie Kallestad, an acoustic duo hailing from Duluth, Minnesota, with roots in folk, bluegrass and rock n’ roll. Petersen and Kallestad have been heavily influenced both by Duluth’s burgeoning alternative music scene and the resurgence of traditional music styles in the region. The songs of St. Anyway cover a wide spectrum—from lilting acoustic ballads to rowdy bluegrass banjo shakedowns and innovative alt-country creations. A dual songwriting force, Petersen and Kallestad conjure visions of the city with wry observation and evocative imagery. Their songs can punch out a powerful message or wind with insinuating melody down the back roads of a clever narrative. Between original songs, expect to hear rejuvenated folk and blue-grass covers as well as stand-out banjofied versions of rock classics. Apart from the inescapable folk-rock legacy of Minnesota’s own Bob Dylan, the pair also cite Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Ryan Adams as major musical influences. In addition, Petersen and Kallestad claim to draw inspiration from other Minnesota homegrown acts—The Replacements, Trampled by Turtles, and Charlie Parr.

Show starts at 10pm!

Novice Theory w/ Jive Grave 1/20/10

Great show last Wednesday! Thanks to everyone for coming out; we hope to see you again this Wednesday for Novice Theory w/ Jive Grave!

"strongly narrative songs and evocative performances”

- The New Yorker

Novice Theory is the brainchild of Brooklyn multi instrumentalist and composer Geo Wyeth. The project has evolved from solo performance to a full band of brooding, thwacking musicians with hot chops that slice like a samarai steak knife. With roots in prog rock, jazz and performance art, Novice Theory has been bungling the masses as such NYC venues as Joe's Pub, Galapagos Art Space, Ars Nova, Zipper Factory, Rockwood Music Hall and other downtowny Brooklynish spots. Wyeth uses his own lens to communicate conflict in music and narrative, intertwining anti nostalgic Americana story songs about legacy and destruction with loose and fierce horn arrangements and percussive piano playing. He is currently resident composer at Ars Nova Theater, where he is slaying the dragons and writing a song cycle about a collective funeral for a group of activists, celebrities, and fictional characters, and the magical and hilarious displacement of death on the internet, to be produced in Spring 2010. You can find Novice Theory's latest EP "Ordinary Death" for sale on iTunes.

current players are:

geo wyeth - vocals, piano, accordion, guitar, percussion

brain newman - trumpet

timothy johnson - flute

tina richerson - baritone sax

daniel arnow - bass

keith parker - drums

Don't miss these guys, up from Brooklyn just for us! Show starts at 10pm in the back room.

Tim Palmieri will be getting things started in the front room at 9:30 and playing all night.

So you'll have two rooms of music, festival style! Grab a beer and hang out for some pool to Tim's solo acoustic sounds, or lounge in the back room cushion seating area while you ponder the evocative lyrics of Novice Theory - or dance it up!

$2 drink specials til 11pm, $3 Jäger shots all nite!

No cover charge - Free show!
